It’s the biggestbreak they’ve had since last year’s sophomoreeffort, Sounds Good Feels Good, cementedthem as one of the biggest pop-punk bands in the world. You could say they’ve probably earned this one. But, of course, when you set your sights on worlddomination, there’s no such thing as real time off. And withthe release of new single Girls Talk Boys, included on theGhostbusters remake soundtrack, the Sydney quartet arenot wasting a moment of the world’s attention. What’sinteresting, though, is that with the song highlighting a verydifferent sound, the band are hinting at a sonic evolution…“It’s more of a groove-type of song,” reveals drummer/singer Ashton Irwin to K!. “It’s reminiscent of Miss Youby The Rolling Stones and stuff like that, or even TalkingHeads! That’s an exciting sound to us, and we’re ready toprogress a little more. We wanna nd something excitingthat’s a mix, that maybe will become our type of soundthat we’re identied for. On our rst couple of EPs,people used to say to me, ‘Oh, you guys just remind me ofAmerican Pie,’ (laughs) and I nd that really funny. So it’snice to progress from there – we started somewhere andwe’re going to a different place. It’s kind of an older soundand it’s a bit funky, too, which is fun.”If that doesn’t sound like the 5SOS you know and love, fretnot – the boys are just stretching their creative wings. As towhether we’ll be hearing more of that soon, guitarist MichaelClifford conrms only that they’ve “started thinking about”the next album. Fair enough, but you have to wonder: howmuch will the 5SOS sound change in the years to come?“Not, like, drasticgenre changes, more the same thingwith Girls Talk Boys – [in that] it sounds very different toSounds Good Feels Good,” predicts guitarist/singer LukeHemmings. “You just try out new things – maybe in thefuture it’ll be way different, but at the moment it’s justtaking inuences from other things, and adding them intoa guitars, bass and drums band somehow; adding moregroove and different beats. We wrote with some pop guysand were really trying to start with a hip-hop beat. FallOut Boy did a similar thing, where they started with a hip-hop beat… so it’s more like that kind of thing than doingfunk – it’s more using elements of it.”“We spoke about The Beatles in soundcheck,” chips inAshton. “And that’s one thing they did really great – theyused all the inuences from the time and then they put itinto their music, and exceptionally well, obviously.”So do you think you could be the next Beatles?“No,” declares Ashton. “I just wanna take inspiration fromthat and be alert to current trends in music. We haven’thad a chance to do that yet – we’ve just been doing whatfeels right, but now we need to experiment with it.”Watch the Girls Talk Boys video attKerrang.com5SOS (L – R): Michael Clifford, AshtonIrwin, Luke Hemmings, Calum HoodKERRANG! 5WORDS:AMIT SHARMAINTERVIEW:JENNYFER J.
