battle scenes from the Courtrai Chest, carved in the early four-
teenth century to commemorate the victory of the Flemings over the French
at Courtrai, IIJuly 1302 (see pp II3-14, 137-42). The chest was found in the early
twentieth century at a farmhouse at Stanton Stjohn, Oxfordshire, the property
of New College, Oxford, and is now in the Warden's Lodgings there: its
previous history is unknown.
