The Thorlabs Family of Companies Welcomes Covega
In March 2009, Thorlabs added to its growing family of
companies when it acquired Thorlabs Quantum Electronics,
formerly Covega Corporation. Covega is well known as a world-
class manufacturer of InP and LiNbO
3
proprietary technologies.
Their superior opto-electronic product technologies are
supported by a manufacturing infrastructure capable of
producing high-performance optical devices and modules that
are designed to meet the needs of a diverse customer base. Their
components are widely used by laboratory researchers, product
developers, and OEM companies alike.
We are excited about the addition of the Covega team into the
Thorlabs family. The Covega team, now Thorlabs Quantum
Electronics (TQE), complements and enhances the capabilities
of Thorlabs as we continue to move toward more complete
solutions for our customers. The products from Thorlabs
Quantum Electronics enable and support vital technology areas
that are important to Thorlabs, including superluminescent
diodes (SLDs), laser sources, optical modulators, tunable laser
components, and active opto-electronic subsystems. With these
technologies, Thorlabs continues its pursuit in advanced imaging
markets.
Thorlabs Quantum Electronics’ InP products are designed for
use in the 1150 - 1750 nm spectral range and are typically found
in telecommunication, medical instrumentation, and sensor
applications. The company’s InP product families include SAF
gain block, Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs), Booster
Optical Amplifiers (BOAs), Fabry-Perot Lasers, Broad-Area
Lasers, and Superluminescent Diodes (SLDs). The company uses
their technological advantage of high-power InP active waveguide
designs to build an
array of products
with superior
performance by
providing various
combinations of
broad bandwidth,
high power, and
stable operation.
In parallel, the
company also
takes full advantage
of their Lithium Niobate technological advantage to offer a
family of high performance, Telcordia-compliant, optical
intensity and phase modulators with industry-leading long-term
reliability. These modulators operate over a range of 10 Gb/s to
40 Gb/s and are sold to a variety of customers and industries.
Expertise and Facilities
Thorlabs Quantum Electronics is a vertically integrated company
with full in-house Indium Phosphide (InP) and Lithium Niobate
(LiNbO
3
) capabilities and foundry services, which include device
design & modeling, wafer growth & fabrication, and electro-
optic device packaging. Members of Thorlabs Quantum
Electronics’ team are pioneers in high-power semiconductor
lasers, optical amplifiers, and LiNbO
3
modulators. The team’s
vast knowledge includes materials science, device design, wafer
growth & fabrication, processing, advanced electro-optic device
packaging, manufacturing, and system engineering. Thorlabs
Quantum Electronics has a 40,000 square foot building in
central Maryland, which includes 18,000 square feet of class 100
and 10,000 cleanroom facilities.

Welcome to the Thorlabs Volume 20 catalog, which makes its way to you as we commemorate our 20th year of serving
the photonics community. As I pause to reflect on the fact that it does not seem possible to have been at this business of
photonics for twenty plus years, I also find myself considering some of the significant changes the global community has
experienced over this same time frame.
As a “direct mail” business (or what we used to be
called 20 years ago), we have recognized for some time
that our natural resource-intensive paper catalog must
eventually find a new format that provides an even
better vehicle to guide our customers in their product
selection. Electronic paper shows signs of real promise
for a catalog like Thorlabs, and as tools like the Amazon
Kindle evolve, we may well see that tool provide a
mechanism for virtually distributing our catalog.
For Thorlabs in the near term, we see our website as the
default alternative to our paper catalog. As a matter of
fact, the publication you are reading now might likely
be the last Thorlabs catalog to be printed on paper and
physically distributed to over 100,000 photonics users worldwide.
As we make this transition, we understand that we need to produce a website that is significantly better than the
traditional paper catalog, and even better than the “paper + web” model that so many of our customers employ when they
browse and select our products.
To this end, our web designers have reorganized our website in a way that I feel provides a much clearer and more
efficient method to find any particular product. Additionally we are working to provide depth of content on each and
every product so that you can easily assess the appropriateness of those products for your research needs. We have also
restructured the Volume 20 catalog to better match the new website structure we will be unveiling concurrent with the
release of the paper catalog.
May I ask you to have a look at the new visual navigation architecture on our website? I believe that efficient web design
at its best incorporates the many ways that people think and make decisions, and this is where you can continue to help
us improve. I would love to hear from you with your suggestions, comments, and critiques. If you do take the time to
email me, I also promise to respond; as many of you already know, I value and immensely enjoy the personal dialogue I
get to have with our customers and colleagues.
Once again, thank you for 20 great years. I hope Thorlabs has served you well in the past and will continue to do so in
the future.
Best Wishes,
Alex Cable
